Week 15 Reflection

1) Chapter 9 discusses using technology in the classroom in effective ways to improve student achievement. This is related to what we have previously learned in that technology is a tool in education to help kids understand and retain the information in long-term memory. As the cognition book mentioned students lean in different ways. Technology brings in a hands-on tool to help kids succeed.
2) What am I not clear on? I had no idea how much technology software is out there for use in the classroom. I will do my research this summer to try to use more of this in my classroom. The students will be more involved and more interested in their learning.
3) It is important to introduce new technology in the classroom because we live in a technology age where students will need to know how to use it in the future as they join the workforce. I am going to look into podcasts for students that miss assignments. In the weekly discussion it was mentioned that kids could make these. This might be a good idea in Algebra after a test to get another type of assessment for each student. I think that students would enjoy it and it would be more interesting for other students to watch.

  1. I think that podcasts would be an invaluble tool for mathematics, especially when so much of the future material is dependant on knowing the earlier stuff. You might be looking at something that becomes a staple for future classrooms. If students miss class they can watch it through podcasting.

  2. Wow! I never thought about podcasts! I guess it's good for those with the technology, but what about those who can't afford the technology. I'm just thinking about my teaching experiences when I was at a district that had 30% middle class kids (some who drove expensive cars) and 70% free and reduced lunch kids who missed the majority of school and do not have the technology needed. I wonder if one day the schools could provide a small building with technology in a poorer area (with a great security system!) where students could walk to and catch up on what they missed for that day or even walk to it to hear the lesson via podcasts at the time you are teaching it. Our world is changing in so many ways and maybe that might be the opportunity those students need to succeed because they can't seem to make it to school for whatever reasons may be. Now that I'm in a district with a higher SES, it's easy for me to think about using more tech because many of the families have it, but I have to ground myself and think about how it is a disadvantage for my students without it. I think you have a wonderful idea though! You are headed on the right track!

  3. I like how you talk about how students all learn in different ways. I always think of the different ways being hands on, lecture, independently, or one on one, but never really thought of technology falling in that category. I think you are exactly right though. I think there are kids out there that just pick things up better and faster when using some form of technology. Obviously as teachers it is our job to give them this opportunity to do so.

  4. I love the idea about Podcasts! I teach middle school math and I tell the kids every year at the beginning of the year, you can not miss much of my class. I feel with math, it is hard to catch up after missing a day, or two, or sometimes a whole week. I am not very familiar with podcasts, but I think it sounds like a wonderful idea!!!
